AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ELKO NV
303 PM PST FRI NOV 20 2009

.SYNOPSIS...A STORM SYSTEM WILL MOVE INTO THE REGION TONIGHT.
BREEZY TO WINDY CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THIS EVENING AHEAD
OF THIS SYSTEM...WITH SNOW SHOWERS TONIGHT ACROSS NORTHERN NEVADA.
A WEAK STORM SYSTEM WILL BRUSH EXTREME NORTHERN NEVADA SUNDAY.
HIGH PRESSURE REBUILDS OVER THE REGION MONDAY ON THROUGH NEXT WEEK
WITH DRY CONDITIONS AND ABOVE NORMAL HIGH TEMPERATURES EXPECTED.
&&

.SHORT TERM...TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY. A STRONG UPPER TROUGH AND
ITS ASSOCIATED COLD FRONT ARE CURRENTLY MOVING INTO NOCAL/NW NV.
THIS SYSTEM IS CAUSING BREEZY TO WINDY CONDITIONS ACROSS THE
ENTIRE REGION THIS AFTERNOON. SO FAR...THE STRONGEST WINDS HAVE
BEEN OVER CENTRAL NV WHERE PEAK GUSTS BETWEEN 50-55 MPH HAVE BEEN
EXPERIENCED. THESE WINDS HAVE ALSO BEEN STIRRING UP A LOT OF DUST
AROUND THE AREA. KWMC HAS HAD THE LOWEST VISIBILITY IN BLOWING
DUST TODAY...DOWN TO AROUND A MILE AT TIMES. WITH THE STORM SYSTEM
CONTINUING TO MOVE EAST THIS EVENING...WILL CONTINUE TO SEE BREEZY
TO WINDY CONDITIONS AND AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ACROSS OUR CWA. WILL
CONTINUE WITH WIND ADVISORY OVER CENTRAL NV UNTIL 8PM. SO FAR
THERE HAS NOT BEEN A NEED FOR A BLOWING DUST ADVISORY OVER
HUMBOLDT COUNTY AS VSBYS BELOW 1 MILE ARE NOT WIDESPREAD ENOUGH
AND SHOULD ACTUALLY BE IMPROVING OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS AS
CLOUDS/PRECIP MOVE INTO THE AREA. STILL APPEARS AS IF REV'S AREA
WILL TAKE THE BRUNT OF THIS STORM SYSTEM. THE UPPER TROUGH WILL
LOSE ITS PUNCH AS IT CROSSES NORTHERN NV TONIGHT. WINDS SHOULD
DIMINISH BY THIS EVENING...AND ONLY EXPECTING A FEW SNOW SHOWERS
ACROSS NORTHERN NV OVERNIGHT. THE HIGHEST PEAKS COULD END UP WITH
AN INCH OR SO OF SNOW...BUT THE VALLEYS OF NORTHERN NV WILL BE
LUCKY TO SEE A DUSTING OVERNIGHT.

THE STORM SYSTEM WILL MOVE OUT OF NE NV BY SATURDAY AFTERNOON.
THERE STILL SHOULD BE A FEW LINGERING SNOW SHOWERS OVER FAR NE NV.
THE BIGGEST CHANGE TOMORROW WILL BE TEMPERATURES AS THEY ARE
EXPECTED TO BE NOTICEABLY COOLER THAN TODAY. HIGHS SATURDAY WILL
BE IN THE 30S AND 40S.

A MUCH WEAKER SYSTEM WILL CLIP EXTREME NORTHERN NEVADA ON
SUNDAY...WITH UP TO AN INCH OF ADDITIONAL SNOW IN THE MOUNTAINS OF
NORTHERN ELKO COUNTY. BREEZY CONDITIONS ARE LIKELY IN THE AREA AS
WELL. TEMPS WILL WARM A LITTLE BIT AND GENERALLY BE IN THE 40S.

HIGH PRESSURE WILL REBUILD OVER THE GREAT BASIN BY MONDAY.
THIS WILL RESULT IN DRY CONDITIONS AND NEAR TO SLIGHTLY ABOVE
NORMAL TEMPERATURES.

.LONG TERM...MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH NEXT FRIDAY. A RIDGE OF HIGH
PRESSURE IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE ACROSS THE GREAT BASIN FOR THE
BEGINNING TO MIDDLE PORTIONS OF NEXT WEEK. EXPECT TEMPERATURES TO
GRADUALLY INCREASE TO NEAR CLIMATOLOGICAL NORMS THROUGH MAINLY
THANKSGIVING. THERE IS AN OUTSIDE CHANCE FOR ANOTHER STORM SYSTEM TO
APPROACH THE FORECAST AREA BY LATE NEXT WEEK INTO THE WEEKEND...AND
WE HAVE SLIGHT CHANCE POPS TO ACCOUNT FOR THIS.

WINDS WILL GENERALLY BE LIGHT DURING THE LONG TERM PERIOD THROUGH
THURSDAY.
&&

.AVIATION...STRONG SOUTH TO SOUTHWEST WINDS OF 20 TO 30 KT WITH
GUSTS TO AROUND 40 KT WILL CONTINUE AHEAD OF A COLD FRONT. BLOWING
DUST WILL RESULT IN REDUCED VISIBILITIES AND CEILINGS...WITH AREAS
OF MVFR/LCL IFR CONDITIONS NORTH OF A KU31-KP68-KELY LINE. WINDS
WILL EASE WITH THE PASSAGE OF THE COLD FRONT LATER THIS EVENING FROM
WEST TO EAST. EXPECT MVFR CONDITIONS ALONG AND BEHIND THE COLD FRONT
DUE TO RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS. SNOW LEVELS WILL START OUT AROUND 5500
TO 6000 FEET ACROSS ELKO COUNTY AND 4500 FEET OVER HUMBOLDT COUNTY.
SNOW LEVELS WILL DECREASE RAPIDLY BEHIND THE COLD FRONT...AND ANY
RAIN WILL QUICKLY CHANGE TO SNOW. LOOK FOR THE BEST CHANCES FOR
-SHRA/-SHSN ACROSS THE NORTHERN HALF OF THE FORECAST AREA. SKIES
WILL GRADUALLY SCATTER OUT FROM WEST TO EAST AFTER 21/07Z.
&&

.LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...

WIND ADVISORY UNTIL 8 PM PST THIS EVENING FOR NVZ013-035-037.
