NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Boise Idaho
1006 am MDT Thursday Sep 3 2015

Discussion...a band of showers associated with an upper jet was
oriented SW-NE across eastern Oregon and SW Idaho...along and just
west of a Rome-Ontario-McCall line. Rainfall amounts have been
light...except for the far northern high terrain west and north of
McCall where up to a quarter /0.25/ inch occurred so far this
morning. The band of showers will slowly move east through the
afternoon...with the best chance for additional rainfall in the
west central mountains. Will update the forecast for higher probability of precipitation
across the north. Temperatures will be cooler today along with
locally breezy northwest winds.

&&

Aviation...VFR. Light showers with low VFR ceilings. Areas of
MVFR mainly in the heavier showers. Central Idaho mountains
obscured. Surface winds generally northwest 5-15kt. Winds aloft at 10k feet
mean sea level...SW 15-25kt.

Weekend outlook...cutoff low pressure system will bring periods
of rain...low VFR and local MVFR ceilings to southeast Oregon and SW
Idaho Friday and Saturday. VFR conditions with decreasing clouds
on Sunday.

&&

Previous discussion...
short term...yesterday/S cold front brought cooling and moderate
northwest winds to our County Warning Area except in south-central Idaho. A second
cold front will come through today with further cooling as well as
showers in northern zones and the mountains of southern zones. Frontal
boundary will weaken in Idaho this evening but showers will continue
in Eastern Valley County/ID. Cold upper low near Vancouver/British Columbia will
go south along the Washington Cascades today and Oregon Cascades
Friday. Showers will spread eastward across Oregon Friday afternoon
while residual showers continue in the central Idaho mountains.
Cooling aloft due to the upper low will cause destabilization Friday
and a slight chance of thunderstorms in addition to the showers.
Main cooling at the surface will not be felt until Friday night and
Saturday. Surface winds will be light to moderate northwesterly
today then lighter northwesterly tonight and Friday.

Long term...Friday night through Thursday...models are in good
agreement showing a deep upper level trough over the intermountain
region on Saturday...with scattered showers at lower elevations and
more numerous showers over the higher terrain. Expect breezy west to
northwest winds Saturday afternoon and evening. Highs will be around
20 degrees below normal...rising no higher than the 60s in the lower
valleys. Lows will be 5 to 15 degrees below normal Saturday and
Sunday...with 40s in the lower valleys and 30s or colder in the
mountains. Snow levels will be mainly above 7000 feet...but could
falls as low as 6000 feet in eastern Oregon by Saturday morning. The
trough will exit to the east on Sunday...replaced by warmer and
drier westerly flow aloft. A gradual warming trend will return
temperatures to near normal on Wednesday and above normal on
Thursday.
