NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Boise Idaho
322 am MDT Thursday Jul 31 2014

Short term...today through Friday...warm upper level ridge will
dominate the short term pattern. Highs will still be above normal.
Above normal moisture /of 0.75 inches precipitable water/ is available for
thunderstorms. Wagontown RAWS picked up over a third of an inch of
precipitation Wednesday. And sho-pai RAWS gusted to 51 miles per hour in the evening.
Local gusts to around 30 miles per hour were observed in the Boise area.
Abundant small hail was observed Wednesday. These characteristics area
also expected today. Storm movement will be slow again today. With
precipitable water below an inch believe that the flash flood threat will
continue to be on burn scars so have held off issuing a watch for
that as the affected area looks to be minimal. Watervapor imagery
shows an impulse over SW Oregon which is expected to lift across
the Oregon blues today. A second impulse approaching the Nevada-Utah
border looks to remain south of our area but could aid storms
across Twin Falls. So scattered thunderstorms with abundant
lightning are expected from west and north of Burns across the
mountains of Baker County through this evening. Terrain
circulations are supportive for thunder across the Boise Forest
again but believe that large scale has a bit of subsidence ahead
of the two aforementioned upper level impulses that will keep
coverage to widely scattered or isolated today.

Long term...Friday night through Wednesday...latest model runs have
continued the trend of a change in the weather pattern for next
week. But until next week the forecast area will remain under a
moist southwest flow as a ridge of high pressure remains over the
intermountain west with an upper level trough over the Gulf of
Alaska. Airmass under the ridge will remain moist as monsoon
moisture continues to move north for afternoon and evening showers
and thunderstorms into early next week. Temperatures will average a
few degrees above normal. Tuesday night into Wednesday the upper
level trough will begin to move east over Canada and bring a zonal
flow to the Pacific northwest. This will push the monsoon moisture
to the south and east with dry conditions returning to the forecast
area. Temperatures by Wednesday will remain a few degrees above
normal.

Aviation...VFR. Scattered to broken middle and high level clouds.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms will redevelop this afternoon
and linger into this evening. Some uncertainty as to if any
thunderstorms will move over any taf sites but if they do ktwf and
kjer have the best chance. Some thunderstorms will contain heavy
rain for isolated IFR conditions. Thunderstorms will also contain
hail and gusty erratic winds with gusts of 30 knots or higher.
Winds aloft will be 10 knots or less up through 10k feet mean sea level.
