NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Boise Idaho
956 am MDT Friday Sep 4 2015

Discussion...showers continue this morning over the Idaho mountains...
especially the eastern Boise Mountains reports show over half an inch
of rain fell overnight near Stanley and we expect these amounts
also occurred in the eastern mountains of our County Warning Area. For today...we
expect additional showers and isolated thunderstorms to move into
Harney County late this morning or early this afternoon. We have
lowered the maximum temperature forecast a few degrees in that area. Latest
indications from multiple models is that a reinforcing shot of
cold air will move through the County Warning Area from late this afternoon
through the evening. This feature will likely be a combination of
a secondary cold front along with outflow from precipitation. It
looks like it will enter the Treasure valley near Ontario around 6
PM...Boise between 8 and 9 PM...and Mountain Home by 10 PM. Gusts
30-40 miles per hour are possible right when the front moves in. Winds in
the forecast have been increased to account for this potential.
Update out shortly.

&&

Aviation...mostly VFR. Mountains obscured with MVFR showers and
patchy fog in central Idaho mountains. Showers and isolated
thunderstorms developing over southeast Oregon later this morning
spreading across southwest Idaho this afternoon. Surface winds
westerly 5-15kt. A strong gradient and frontal feature will
develop and move across the region between 00z/Sat and 06z/Sat
with west-northwest winds 15-25kt with gusts to 40kt. Winds aloft at 10k feet
mean sea level...SW 20-30kt becoming northwest 25-35kt in southeast Oregon by 21z/Sat.

&&

Previous discussion...
short term...upper low along the Washington coast at 09z still moving
south. Low should get to southwestern Oregon tonight then turn back toward
the NE over our Oregon zones overnight...then to northern Idaho late
Saturday. Showers will continue today in the central Idaho
mountains while also increasing this afternoon in Oregon zones. Cold
air aloft with the upper low will destabilize the air for a slight
chance of thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Cold air and
showers...snow showers above about 7500 feet mean sea level in northern
areas...will finally spread across Idaho zones tonight and Saturday
with maximum temperatures Saturday as much as 20 degrees below normal...highs
in the 50s in the mountains to only the middle 60s in the lower
valleys. Even with highs that cold the air will again be unstable
enough for a slight chance of thunderstorms Saturday afternoon.
Light northwest winds today and tonight...light to moderate
northwest winds Saturday.

Long term...Saturday night through Thursday...upper level trough
will move out of the area Saturday night with lingering showers over
the west central Idaho mountains. Sunday northwesterly flow will
develop over the Pacific northwest for dry conditions through the
rest of the week. Temperatures will start out 10-14 degrees below
normal with a slow warming trend through the week with temperatures
back to near normal for Wednesday and Thursday.
