Severe Weather Alert Descriptions

Dense Fog Advisory  Statement as of 2:41 am MST on February 9, 2016

... Dense fog advisory in effect until noon MST today...

The National Weather Service in Pocatello has issued a dense fog
advisory... which is in effect until noon MST today.

* Visibility... sudden decreases in visibility from a mile or more
to near zero is possible in the Snake River Plain and the upper
Snake River Highlands below 6500 feet elevation.

* Impacts... near zero visibility developing suddenly can make
driving at normal speeds extremely hazardous. You must drive
slow enough to give yourself reaction time. Do not drive faster
than your headlights and reflexes allow. With temperatures below
freezing... dense fog can deposit a thin slick layer of
ice... commonly called black ice... on the roadway. This increases
the hazard by making your motor vehicle slow to respond to
braking action.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A dense fog advisory means visibilities will frequently be
reduced to less than one quarter mile. If driving... slow down...
use your headlights... and leave plenty of distance ahead of you.

NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Pocatello Idaho
251 am MST Tuesday Feb 9 2016

Short term...today through Thursday night. Strong high pressure
remains in place during this entire time. The main result is fog
and stratus below the night-time inversions. The fog is more
widespread this morning compared to yesterday morning. Thus have
issued a dense fog advisory...although the dense fog appears
limited on cameras and in the observations to the upper Snake
River Plain and the lower elevations of the upper snake
Highlands...including the Teton valley. At least the next two
nights look like a repeat of Monday night with fog and stratus
problems. Upper level cloud cover and more moisture in the central
Idaho mountains for Thursday and Thursday night might mean a shift in where
the fog may develop. Have tried to emulate this in the grids. The
cloud cover will continue to suppress afternoon warming for the
plain and valley zones...while much of the central Idaho mountains
will bask in sunshine...approaching the 50 degree mark for the
afternoon. Cannot rule out that lower elevations could get a break
in the cold temperatures if the stratus can break and skies
clear...but it didnt happen yesterday. Light wind continues except
above 9000 feet elevation. Messick

Long term...Friday through Tuesday night. Both GFS and European model (ecmwf) in
agreement with the upper ridge moving to the east on Friday...being
replaced by an upper trough moving into the Pacific northwest on Sat. Models have
been fairly consistent with bringing light precipitation to the central
mountains and eastern Highlands Sat and sun. Broad upper ridging builds
in behind the trough...but amplitude is low. This allows Pacific moisture
to move back into the central mountains by Tuesday night for another round of
light precipitation. Hedges
&&

Aviation...persistent upper ridge is resulting in inversion
conditions. Low ceilings/fog fill much of the Snake River Plain/eastern
Magic Valley this morning. Should see limited improvement by this
afternoon... staying below VFR. Ceiling/visible expected to drop again tonight.
Low ceilings expected to remain south of ksun. Hedges
&&

Pih watches/warnings/advisories...
dense fog advisory until noon MST today for idz019-020.
