NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Pocatello Idaho
223 PM MST Friday Nov 28 2014

Short term...tonight through Monday.
Expect precipitation to move into the central mountains after
sunset and into the eastern Highlands Saturday morning. Have
continued with the snow advisories through Saturday night and
added the Idaho Wasatch into the advisory as well. Snow levels
start out very high...over 8 thousand feet but still expect them
to drop Saturday and Saturday night reaching valley floors by then
behind a cold front that will move through late Saturday. Think 4
to 10 inches mainly above 6 thousand feet in the advisory areas is
likely with locally higher amounts over mountain passes in the
central mountains. Precipitation should end for the most part on
Sunday with some very light snow showers perhaps lingering in the
extreme south near the Utah border but accumulations should be
very light. May see some more light mountain snow on Monday with
very light accumulations expected. Have had record breaking warmth
in Pocatello once again today and once again expect widespread
above normal temperatures on Saturday. Will see sharply colder
temperatures on Sunday behind the cold front with well below
normal readings expected....teens and 20s mountains and 20s and
30s in the snake plain. Will see some warming moving in Monday.
Gk

Long term...Monday night through Friday. The GFS and European model (ecmwf) models
have come in better alignment through this period though the GFS
model is slightly faster by a couple of hours. Look for an lingering
system Monday night into Tuesday morning with light to moderate
precipitation in westerly upslope flow over the central mountains
and upper snake Highlands. The next system moves into the area from
our south on Wednesday bringing good precipitation chances to our
southern and eastern areas at this point. Expect gradually drying on
Thursday and Friday...though the models show weak showers in weak
upslope northwest flow over the northern central mountains and upper
snake Highlands. Wyatt &&

Aviation...ceilings will start with mainly middle and upper clouds this
afternoon and gradually decrease through the period with an
approaching system. Expect a rain and snow mix at ksun this evening
with brief snow with accompanying MVFR ceilings/visible possible before
turning to a rain and snow mix again by middle to late tomorrow
morning. The other taf sites should remain VFR with vicinity showers
tomorrow morning with rain showers and possible MVFR ceilings possible
in the afternoon. Expect moderate winds tomorrow afternoon as well
for the Snake River Plain. Wyatt
