NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Boise Idaho
330 am MST Wednesday Jan 28 2015

Short term...today through Thursday...exiting low pressure system
will keep scattered showers over eastern zones this morning...
after which precipitation will taper off. Drier air is slow to
work in so much of southeast Oregon and southwest Idaho will keep
some kind of cloud cover today. In the Snake River Valley it will
likely be a low cloud or fog that lingers...due in part to
westerly upslope wind. Drier air works in aloft tonight allowing
for some clearing. The clearing overhead allows the coverage of
fog and low clouds to expand tonight into Thursday across lower
elevations. An east wind on Thursday will likely push the fog and
low clouds further into southeastern Oregon to include northern
Harney County and possibly southern Malheur County. Temperatures
will continue above normal at most sites.

Long term...Thursday night through Wednesday. Dry conditions are
expected Thursday through Saturday as the area will remain in a
split flow pattern with a cutoff low over the Desert Southwest. For
Sunday and beyond...both the GFS and European model (ecmwf) are showing the low
moving east and our area transitioning into a more zonal flow with
shortwaves moving through. Models seem more consistent now on
showing one of these shortwaves moving over the area on Monday...so
increased probability of precipitation during that time. Models diverge quickly over precipitation
chances for Tuesday and beyond as both show a ridge...but the European model (ecmwf)
is continuing to show more moisture spilling over...so climatology probability of precipitation
remain. Temperatures are expected to remain at or above normal
through the middle/long term.

Aviation...areas of IFR/LIFR fog/stratus expected to continue in
Treasure...magic...and southeast Oregon valleys until middle
morning...then VFR. All other areas VFR with middle/high clouds. Expect
clearing after 28/18z...then another round of valley fog/stratus is
possible after 29/03z. Surface winds generally 12 kts or less. Winds
aloft near 10k feet mean sea level...northwest 10-20 kts.

&&

Air stagnation...mixing heights will range from 1500 to 2000
feet this afternoon with a northwest wind to 15 miles per hour in the mixed
layer. Mixing will improve some on Thursday as a winds shift to
the east pushing mixing heights to 2000-3000 feet Thursday
afternoon. After Thursday the inversion gradually strengthens
lowering mixing heights back below 2000 feet above ground level.
