NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Boise Idaho
325 am MDT Thursday may 23 2013

Short term...today through Friday...latest temperatures in the
Treasure valley were in the 30s to lower 40s. Coldest readings...
which were found in Nampa...Eagle...and Mountain Home...were just
above freezing. Light winds...clear skies...and a dry air will allow
for temperatures to continue to fall to 32f or colder in portions of
the Treasure valley. Thus...the freeze warning will remain in effect
until 9 am MDT. A band of clouds stretched across the western Magic
Valley has slowed down the cooling there as temperatures were at or above
40f. However...the band may shift to the east long enough to allow
frost to form in some areas just before sunrise. For now...will
allow the frost advisory to remain in effect until 9 am MDT.

Otherwise...a deep closed low centered over Washington this morning
will move little through tonight. A short wave pivoting around the
the south side of the low will move into our area this afternoon for
scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms...mainly in the
mountains. The wave will move north of the area tonight while a
second one moves through northern portions of the County Warning Area on Friday for
a chance of showers and a slight chance of afternoon
thunderstorms...generally north of a Burns-Ontario-Idaho City line.
Temperatures will trend warmer through Friday.

Long term...Friday night through Thursday...closed upper level low
will remain the dominant weather feature over the Pacific northwest
through late Saturday - when it moves northeast into Alberta.
However...only minor changes in sensible weather are forecast as a
short wave approaches /from the west/ in its wake. Short wave will
move off to the east early Monday...but progressive pattern will
continue through next week as an elongated Pacific trough moves
inland and keeps cooler/wetter weather in place through much of next
week. Wednesday and Thursday look to be the wettest days overall.
Temperatures forecast to be at or below normal through the period.

&&

Aviation...widespread VFR through 18z. Isolated MVFR-IFR rain and
snow showers will develop across southeast Oregon and higher terrain of SW
Idaho after 18z. Snow levels generally 5000 to 6500 feet mean sea level. Minor
threat of thunderstorm development /same areas/ between 22z and 02z.
Light west/northwest surface winds - except in the vicinity of thunderstorms. Winds
aloft will be predominantly westerly and average 10 kts at 10k feet
mean sea level.
