NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Boise Idaho
330 am MDT Sat Nov 1 2014

Short term...today through Sunday...the cold upper level trough is
still deepening over the coast with the best dynamic support over
central California and western Nevada...where locally moderate
precipitation and isolated thunderstorms are currently happening.
The trough will continue to move inland over the intermountain
region today bringing widespread precipitation to southeast Oregon
and southwest Idaho. A speed maximum rounding the base of the trough
will enhance precipitation support over eastern Idaho this
afternoon. The associated cold front will cross southeast Oregon
this morning...pass Boise and McCall around midday...and reach the
Magic Valley late this afternoon. Gusty southwest to west winds 15
to 25 miles per hour will follow the front...driven mainly by pressure
gradients with little support from relatively light middle level winds.
By this evening snow levels will lower to between 4500 and 5000 feet
in eastern Oregon and 5000-6000 feet in central and southwest Idaho.
Total rainfall could range up to a third of an inch in the lower
valleys...with 5 to 8 inches of snow in the mountains above 6000
feet. No advisories are being issued at this time as the snow level
is expected to stay above our impact areas. Precipitation will slack
off from the west tonight and Sunday morning and end for most of our
area by midday. Maximum temperatures today will range from 5 to 8
degrees cooler in the Magic Valley to around 15 degrees cooler in
eastern Oregon. On Sunday temperatures in eastern Oregon will change
little...while our eastern zones including the Magic Valley will
cool an additional 15 degrees. Tonight clouds and wind will prevent
temperatures from dropping below normal...but Sunday night will be
below freezing at most locations.

Long term...Monday night through Saturday...westerly flow into
pacnw will bring precipitation north of a line from kbno-kboi-kjer.
A short wave ridge will build northward over the area Wednesday into
Thursday keeping lower elevations dry with just a slight chance of
precipitation over mountains mainly Wednesday. Another Pacific cold
front will move into southeast Oregon and SW Idaho Friday. Short wave
ridging is on tap for Saturday. Temperatures will be about 5
degrees above normal. The flow will become more northwesterly by
Friday bringing temperatures back to normal or slightly below.

&&

Aviation....cold front will move across Oregon and into SW Idaho
today with frontal passage at kboi around 18z and ktwf/kjer by 00z.
Generally MVFR conditions in precipitation except widespread IFR in the
mountains. Surface winds ahead of front will be easterly 10 to 15
kts...and northwest winds behind the front 10 to 15 kts except
gusting to 39 kts Magic Valley.

Sunday...conditions will improve over southeast Oregon by 12z Sunday
morning and SW Idaho by 15z Sunday morning...becoming VFR across
forecast area by 21z Sunday.
